The Repairs Welding Engineer is responsible for the welding and metallurgical design, development, testing, analysis, and production support of steam / gas turbine and generator rotating and stationary component repairs and refurbishment for Alstom and other OEM equipment. Typical repair and refurbishment consists of weld overlays, weld buildups, section join welding, weld restoration, blade removal, blade repair, blade supply & installation, field and stator rewinds, top tooth repairs, retaining ring replacements, mechanical modifications, component condition assessment, failure analysis, etc. Essential Functions include but are not limited to - Attend and provide input on quotation screening meeting to determine if an opportunity is viable to quote.
- Review customer specifications and develop welding repair / refurbishment scope of work in support of new quotations.
- Perform on site or in house hardware inspections, material testing, metallurgical report analysis, and damage assessment hardware as required to support quotation.
- Provide welding engineering, hardware, and consumable costs estimations for defined scopes of work.
- Support proposal risks reviews by providing welding technical information and participate in assessment of possible project risks.
- Create and support on site customer presentations of proposed repairs / refurbishment.
- Utilize experience and welding, material, metallurgical abilities to produce detailed layouts, procedure, and processes.
- Provide materials and metallurgical technical analysis of repair and refurbishment as well as non-conformance issues.
- Perform and / or review welding / heat treatment layouts for repairs / refurbishment.
- Develop design specifications.
- Define material and metallurgical testing for repairs and refurbishments as required.
- Create and review project and process specific welding and heat treatment procedures as required.
- Review project and component specific CAD drawings in support of welding and heat treatment as required.
- Schedule, definition, and creation of project and component specific purchase requisitions as required.
- Interface with other engineering groups within Alstom to coordinate welding and heat treatment technical requirements and product integrity.
- Assist project management in project administration and customer contact.
- Support shop and on-site production - answer questions and follow progress from a technical standpoint.
- Travel to site to lead and perform material testing, field weld repairs, vendor evaluation, and failure analysis, etc.
- Recognize when the need for additional specialized expertise is essential and take action to procure help.
- Analyze Inspection and Test data and take actions as appropriate.
- Maintain inventory of welding consumables to support future weld repair and refurbishment projects.
- Develop and support new R&D welding processes, materials, and testing as required.
- Support the turbine repairs engineering group as required and defined by the business and Manager of Repairs Engineering.
Education BS in Welding Engineering required. Will consider a BS in Materials or Mettalurgy Engineering with applicable required experience. Skills/Experience - 5+ years experience in rotating and stationary equipment welding, material testing, metallurgical analysis, heat treatment, NDE, and material evaluation / recommendation.
- Experience mentoring and providing technical guidance to Skilled Trades and Engineer Associates.
- Turbine Generator operational experience preferred.
- Hands on experience with Submerged Arc welding; Manual and Automated RIG welding required.
- Hands on experience with Stick and MIG welding preferred.
- Experience with Excel, Word and Power Point Microsoft Office Products.
- Experience with Visio.
- Experience with JDEdwards or similar package preferred.
- Experience with Welding Pro-Write software or equivalent preferred.
- Ability to function in a multi-cultural/multi-national corporation.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and perform in a fast pace customer critical path outage environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Highly motivated, organized, self starting individual with a good work ethic and integrity.
- Fluency in English
- A Plus is understanding of German, French, or the Swedish language.
- Ability to travel domesticly and internationaly up to 25% as needed.
