NAES Corporation, a leading provider of 3rd party O&M services to the Independent Power Industry, is currently recruiting for a Chemistry Supervisor for the Sandy Creek facility currently under construction in Riesel, TX. Sandy Creek is a 900 megawatt coal-fired power plant currently under construction in Riesel, Texas. Consisting of one IHI supercritical pulverized coal boiler, one Toshiba steam turbine generator and Alstom air-quality control systems equipment, it is one of the largest new coal projects in the U.S. and is expected to generate electricity for more than 900,000 Texas homes and businesses. The plant will utilize Powder River Basin coal. GENERAL SUMMARY Plan, schedule and coordinate plant and laboratory analysis and tests required to assure the safe, efficient, reliable chemistry operations of the plant. PRIMARY FUNCTIONS Plan, schedule, and direct the sample collection and analysis of condensate, feed water, sewage, and bearing cooling and steam systems. Prepare, maintain, and supervise the preparation and maintenance of records, reports, graphs and logs in accordance with Company or outside agency requirements. Perform statistical analysis and computer modeling and utilize other analytical tools as needed to interpret study results and prepare reports. Prepare plant procedures and training programs related to water and steam treatment. Initiate and maintain contacts in professional associations and other utilities and analyze scientific literature in order to remain knowledgeable about current and emerging chemistry issues and scientific advances. Monitor and evaluate the performance of plant water treatment systems through review of performance data, visual inspections and daily surveillance of equipment. Troubleshoot system deficiencies and provide corrective actions to ensure that water chemistry conditions are within operating guidelines. Monitor chemical treatment programs for plant systems such as the condenser cooling water, closed cooling water, etc. Ensure that controls are maintained within required limits. Enhance employee awareness of events significant to NAES. Provide subordinates with timely, accurate information regarding the NAES policies and guidelines, external events impacting the company, industry and internal business plans and performance. Encourage employees to contribute ideas to improve operations. Complete other tasks as requested by the Plant Manager. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY The Chemistry Supervisor operates from established and well-known procedures, performing duties independently with only general direction given. Decisions are made within prescribed operation guidelines. The Chemistry Supervisor encounters new and varied work situations, involving a moderate degree of complexity. The Chemistry Supervisor must effectively communicate information to the Plant Manager, the Operations and Maintenance Managers, and the Engineering Manager relative to the operational processes, and provide suggestions for plant improvement. The Chemistry Supervisor must ensure duties are performed in such a way to result in an optimum cost-benefit ratio. All employees have the responsibility to both the customer and their co-workers to do the job right the first time and to ensure the customer's needs are being met. WORKING RELATIONSHIPS The Chemistry Supervisor reports to the Engineering Manager, works in cooperation with the Shift Supervisor on matters pertaining to the daily operation of the plant and responds to direction from the Maintenance Manager, the Plant Manager and Operations Manager. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required. Potential work in high heat/cold atmosphere, ability to climb stairs/ladders, exposure to typical fossil plant conditions. All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post employment random drug screening. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment, Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering or similar discipline is required. A minimum of three years experience with a broad knowledge of power plant steam generator water chemistry control systems and processes, corrosion control methods, water treatment system and equipment, fossil fuel chemistry and stoichiometric chemistry needed. Broad knowledge of chemistry analytical procedures, laboratory techniques, on-line chemistry monitoring equipment and state-of-the-art laboratory analyzers. Experience in supercritical plant water chemistry, including oxygenated water treatment, is desired. Computer Skills: General knowledge of computer applications, power plant chemical control systems and process design to provide chemical engineering support to plant projects and modifications.
